Eating is a quick, effective, inexpensive, reliable, and easy way to numb your feelings, turn off your brain after a tiring day, or use it for a little “me-time” to pamper yourself.
Many times we suppress our negative feelings (stress, anxiety, boredom, fear of failure, or even success, others controlling our lives, lack of self-esteem, etc.) by eating and we don’t even know about it.
If you use the Food and Lifestyle Journal for 7 days, you will see the physical and emotional reasons that make you eat more than you need to, or when you are not hungry.
We learned to use food to anesthetize ourselves accidentally through trial and error or from someone else (parent, sibling, friend, role model). This was the best coping mechanism we could come up with at that time in our life.
An Eating and Lifestyle Journal is the most honest and least biased source of information that you will have at your disposal. There probably won’t be anything as convincing as your own handwriting.
If you see your eating habits, your feelings around food and mealtimes, and events written black and white, you will also see the recurring situations and foods that caused you to overeat.
These observations may be the keys to getting rid of overeating, but only if you fill out the diary completely honestly.
