What is the importance of creating your Life Vision?

In this post, I’m going to show you what a Life Vision is, why you need to have one, and how to create it.

Have you ever noticed that the most interesting, inspiring, and accomplished people always have a vision, even if they don’t know about it? I’ve met many people, who have a plan for their future and they are clear about why they are doing the things they are doing. They have a Purpose, which we discussed in my previous post, and they have also created a Life Vision about how they are going to fulfill that purpose.

On the other hand, I also know people, who are just coasting along with life without knowing what to do. These people live without aspiration, fulfillment, and the real joy that one can feel when she/he accomplishes a goal. They don’t have a Vision or a long term goal. They anesthetize themselves by social media and binge-watching Netflix when the deeper questions about their life pop up in their mind.

This ignorant bliss lasts until their inner voice starts to nag them more often, more intensely and they either become inspired to take action or start to feel useless, and some even become depressed. You are reading this blog, so you are obviously an action taker 🙂

This blog post will help you create a Vision for your life.

What is the Vision?

While our Purpose is the meaning of our life, our Vision is the fulfillment of that purpose.

If you haven’t discovered your Purpose yet, grab my free guide to do one or all the 3 exercises I show you there. They will help you find your Purpose and will give you some ideas about your Vision too.

Your Vision should be future-based. It should inspire you and give guidance and direction. It needs to stretch the imagination. You should have a vision for your personal and professional life as well. You can create a short term and a long term vision for your life.

“Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.” Oprah Winfrey

How to write a Vision for your life?

Very few people create a Life Vision, it is more common for companies to write a Vision Statement. But writing a Life Vision is a very fun and powerful exercise that will dramatically change your life in a positive way.

Think forward to your DREAM life, what do you want your life to be like in 2, 5, 10, 20… years. Don’t hold yourself back, dream big and focus on success. Write the goals you want to accomplish in the present tense as if they’ve already come true! Concentrate on what YOU really want, not what others expect of you! Where do you live? What do you do for a living and in your free time? Where do you shop? Who are the people you want to be surrounded with? What kind of relationships do you want to have with them? How do you look like, how do you eat? Do you exercise? How do you feel? What’s your mental state like? Imagine your future you and your future life in detail.

Write your Life Vision with passion, so it inspires you when you come back to read it in the future. It’ll be especially important to come back to your Life Vision when things get tough. It will remind you that your Vision is bigger than your everyday struggles.

Answer these questions: what are the greatest things you could accomplish in your life? If money wasn’t an issue, what would you love to do? What are the things you don’t like in this world and would want to change? How could you contribute to the world?  Think forward 100 years. How do you want people to remember you? Don’t care about how you would achieve all these ideas, goals. At the moment just let your fantasy go wild and see what you can come up with.

“If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” Steve Jobs

Your Life Vision should be in alignment with your Core Values

Values exist whether we recognize their presence in us or not.  Determining your Core Values will help you discover what’s truly important to you.  Making choices in life based on your Core Values won’t always be easy, but since your Core Values are such a central part of who you are and who you want to be, honoring them is crucial.

Values help us to act with integrity, and when our life priorities are aligned with our values, we are well on our way to experiencing fulfillment in our lives.

Do you know your core values? With this free Assessment on Identifying Your Values guide, you can easily determine them.

You have identified your Core Values, the things that matter to you the most

They could be something like this:

  • Health
  • Family
  • Accomplishment
  • Freedom
  • Financial freedom
  • Service to others
  • Creativity
  • Experiences
  • Contentment

Of course, your Core Values should be different. They will show what’s important for YOU. They will help you paint a picture of the life you want to live. Now you can revisit your Vision and see whether it is in alignment with your Core Values.

When you don’t live in alignment with your Values, you create a disconnect between who you are on the inside and the life you are living on the outside. This disconnect can easily zap your energy and derail you from accomplishing your Vision and dreams.

Finally, commit time, energy and resources to the Life Vision you created, even though you may have no idea how or when it will come true. Set the intention, be patient and make at least a small step every day in the direction of your Life Vision.

What’s the difference between Life Vision and Long-term Goals?

Your Vision is the bigger picture. It determines who you want to be, how, where, and whom you want to live your life with, and what you want to be known for. The goals are the bite-size pieces of your Vision, the steps you need to take to accomplish your Vision. Goals are individual experiences and achievements you aim for. I will write about how to set and achieve your goals in detail in the future, so don’t forget to come back 🙂

In my next post, however, I will show you how to make a Vision Board. It is a visual representation of your Life Vision and it’s a very effective way of visualizing your dream life. Do you remember? I told you about the importance of visualizing what you want to achieve here. I’ll explain it in more detail in my next post about Visual Boards. Go ahead and read it 🙂

I hope I helped you to create a dream Life Vision for yourself. Do you want to share yours with me? You can send me an email or you can share it in a comment below. I would love to cheer you on 🙂
